Wearing in your orthotics
It can take between one to two weeks for you to become accustomed to wearing your new orthotics. During this period you may experience foot, knee or leg discomfort or irritation of the skin that is in contact with your orthotics. Do not become discouraged as this is very common in the initial stage of treatment, and it is a sign that significant functional changes are occurring. To minimise this discomfort and to assist with the care of your orthotics we recommend the following:
Following your treatment plan
If you have been prescribed stretches, exercises or other treatments (i.e. icing, medications), these are an important part of your treatment. If you have been neglecting this, you will find it harder to get used to your orthotics.
Wearing in period
It is very important that you wear your orthotics in gradually. A successful approach for most people is one hour of use the first day, and increasing use by one hour each day. Children usually adapt more quickly than adults. Wearing in time is not the same for everyone. If you feel that your orthotics are uncomfortable, take them out for the rest of the day. If necessary, wear them in more gradually. Be sure to contact your podiatrist if you have any concerns regarding this.
Sports & Orthotics
When you first start wearing your orthotics for sport you may also need to gradually increase usage. A general rule is to wait until you are comfortable to wear them all day before using them for sport.
Cleaning your Orthotics
Your orthotics may be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water. Make sure the orthotics are completely dry before inserting into your shoes.
Shoes
It is important to discuss the types of shoes you may wear with your podiatrist.
• Some shoe designs are too low cut at the heel to be suitable to wear with orthotics, and this will cause your heel to slip out of your shoes.
• It is important to try on new shoes with your orthotics prior to purchasing them.
• If the orthotics cause an audible squeaking in your shoes, try wiping the edges of the device with talcum powder.
Orthotic Reviews
Your Podiatrist will advise you on the frequency of your orthotic reviews. It is very important to attend these appointments to ensure that everything is working fine and to address any issues that occasionally occur. A review appointment will be arranged for 4 weeks; however, this may be different depending on your circumstances.
