Gait analysis is a study of the way someone walks. During a gait analysis, the practitioner is examining movement, particularly of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and lumbar spine. It also involves looking for clues about the patient’s alignment from the way they hold their shoulders, neck, and head. Among other things, the way someone walks is affected by the alignment of bones and joints, any pain, muscular strength or weakness, varying levels of flexibility, and the way the feet and limbs interact with the ground. Gait analysis provides the practitioner with information as to why a person functions poorly or is in pain.
The purpose of gait analysis is to assess your gait cycle (the movements your lower limbs make from the point your foot strikes the floor to the point it touches the floor again) and identify any irregularities so they can be corrected with a tailor-made treatment plan.
Powerful Technology for Accurate Diagnosis
Gait analysis involves more than watching a patient walk. It’s an in-depth biomechanical assessment that employs state-of-the-art technology, such as pressure platforms. This powerful hardware and software help podiatrists to detect and treat gait problems more effectively than if they relied on the naked eye alone.
Taking advantage of video-based gait analysis plus the cutting-edge pressure analysis system called GaitScan™. Computer-generated images showing the distribution of pressure across the soles of your feet assist us in diagnosing and correcting problems.
Gait analysis will reveal if you apply too much or too little pressure to specific areas when walking. Your feet may be pronated (excessive pressure is exerted on the inside edge of each foot) or supinated (excessive pressure is exerted on the outside edge). You’ll find out whether your feet and ankles are misaligned, as well as whether the sides of your body move asymmetrically.
At Pioneer Podiatry, gait analysis forms a key component of our biomechanical assessment.
If you are experiencing pain or have suffered an injury, analysis of your gait will provide our podiatrists with important information as to why the injury may have occurred or why an injury may not be improving. If you or someone close to you walks in an unusual way, such as with a limp, with a lack of balance, or with feet, ankles, or legs that don’t look “as they should”, a gait analysis is advisable. Gait analysis is advantageous in allowing practitioners to work at limiting damaging movements and allowing healing.
